Knight Times April-May 2023

In service to One, In service to all
Dear brother Knight,
the Knights of Columbus do great things being "in service to one, in service to all" for our parish, community, brother Knights and their families, and for those in need. You are a vital and appreciated part of that service! 2020 was a tough year for all of us, many of us have fought not only covid, but other medical and personal issues as well. In the last year and a half we have held only two meetings and zero events. We are also behind in collection of our dues, electing officers, and submitting forms to the central council. I have sent out a few emails in this time but only a few would respond. I pray now that all of my brother Knights, and your friends and family, have weathered this pandemic and are doing well. I encourage all of you to get active again with our council even if all you do is wear your badge. Advertising us is a good way to find recruits and get people interested in us and our events.

When the pandemic lockdown made me lose one of my two jobs, I had to get a different full-time job that paid more in order to cover my bills. This job is very hard and emotionally taxing, cleaning the streets of downtown San Diego along side the homeless, many of which are mentally ill. Because I now work on the weekends as well, these factors have contributed to my neglect of my duties as a Knight.  I had not been keeping up with my duties and responsibilities and sending out timely email notifications or updating this e-newsletter. I was elected Grand Knight for Columbian Year 2019-2020, and I dived into the position head first with passion. But then covid happened and everything was put on hold. Though I desire to fulfill my responsibilities, I simply can not function as Grand Knight with my current work schedule. We need to hold elections anyway, or appoint officers in the interim. We need you to step up. We need a relatively young, healthy, active brother Knight to be Grand Knight so our council can go on. For far too long most of the work had been placed on a chosen few, many of whom, no offense, are up in age and facing medical issues that come with it, some more serious than others. We simply can no longer function with just 1% of members doing 90% of the work. Or at least the 1% we had. We need you. Please step up. Even if you are brand new, heck, even if you're not 3rd degree yet, I do believe we can make an exception in an emergency and elect you an officer. We need you. Now.

Meanwhile, I will regain my zeal for our Order and for our Church and send out timely emails again and newsletters like this one. My work schedule has changed to where i can now participate in events and meetings on weekends and Mondays, but it is still too stressful for me to be an Officer. In the meantime, please send me articles, stories, commentaries, and pics and videos for future e-newsletter editions. And to see all the great service our council gave our parish and community in the years 2018 and 2019, please go to our Facebook page by clicking hereThere is also an archive of all our events going back to our founding in 2015 here . Thank you.

Your brother in Christ,
Christopher Forte, Past Grand Knight,

Thank you to all the brother Knights who helped out at the Pancake Breakfast & Ministry Fair!

Thank you to all the brother Knights who helped out at the Pancake Breakfast & Ministry Fair on Sunday, April 23rd, 2023! Brother Knight Joseph Mantione helped me set up the table and manned it for a few hours. Not pictured but also present helping me and other parish groups were Juan Barrera, Giuseppe Scire-Cimeco, Tom Keeley, James Steidl, Treasurer Joe Buompensiero, Brian Satterlee, and Past Grand Knight James Cardinale-Hill.

While we didn't sign up any new members that day, we have a few interests and we were exposed to the parish community again, letting everyone know we still exist and want to be a contributing group again.

Meetings:
We need to meet in person and discuss our issues face to face. Our meetings used to be the fourth Monday of every month; holidays excepted. Our council has lost its certification from the State and Supreme, so we cannot meet at the church again yet. That is why for this "unofficial" meeting I believe we should meet at the Amici House, 250 W. Date Street, next to the Little Italy Dog Park, just up the street one church from the church. I'm thinking May 22nd at 6:00pm. Let's make it a potluck, free to attend, and open to all brother Knights, not just officers. Please reply to this newsletter or text me at 562-726-8326. Text only. Due to health issues, it is difficult for me to talk on the phone.

Been Away?

Many Knights get busy with family obligations, health issues, Summer trips, work, and, especially in this parish, with other groups and societies, but if you haven't been active with us in a while or paid your dues and want to get back involved, please let us know. Being a Knight isn't about attending meetings, but it does help to stay in the loop. We would at least enjoy your company at one of our events and/or volunteer actions. We value all our brothers and miss your company. Please contact our Financial Secretary Jason Gloyer at 619-466-8729, email: jason.gloyer@gmail.comand to discuss your situation. Thank you.

September-October Recap

In service to One, In service to all
Dear brother Knight,
the Knights of Columbus do great things being "in service to one, in service to all" for our parish, community, brother Knights and their families, and for those in need. You are a vital and appreciated part of that service! In my last email you read about our upcoming events. We pray to see you there! A e-newsletter was not sent out for September, so this edition will recap September and part of October for you. Please send me articles, stories, commentaries, and pics and videos for future editions.. Thank you.
We Hope You Had A Happy Columbus Day!

From the Knights of Columbus-Our Lady of the Rosary Council #16175,we hope you had a great Columbus Day! Carrying Columbus' name, we Knights know the truth about him and defend his reputation and the holiday. Click here to see a story about Columbus from the Knights.
Maria SS Addolorata Society Festa

Our banner was carried in the procession at the Maria SS Addolorata Society Festa Mass on Sunday, September 17th. In addition, we had many 4th Degree members there, including four in regalia (the Color Guard).
It Was A Breakfast Eggstravaganza! And Fr. Joe's Birthday!
On Sunday, September 24th, we had an egg breakfast. This one had a better turnout than last time. As an added bonus, we were able to sing "Happy Birthday" to Father Joe! Click here to see video of Father Joe's birthday!More photos will be posted on the website.

Fr. Joe's Birthday
Happy birthday, Doctorre!

At our last General Meeting on Monday, September 25th, we celebrated our most senior member's 93rd birthday! Buon compleanno Brother Dr. Frank Santucci. Brother Knight Dr. Frank Santucci is also an honorary lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.
Brother Knight Dr. Francesco Santucci's Birthday
Our Lady of the Rosary Festa

Both our 3rd Degree council and our 4th Degree Knights were well represented in the annual Our Lady of the Rosary Festa on Sunday, October 1st. The Color Guard shielded Bishop Robert McElroy who was carrying the monstrance, and I along with Past Grand Knight James Cardinale-Hill carried our council's banner. In addition, many brother Knights in our council are involved in the church and thus at this Festa as Lectors, Ushers, Eucharistic Ministers and in the Choir. And we had a special guest from back East: Brother Knight Kyle Garrett from Council 418 in Virginia helped us with our banner. He works on the Disney cruise ship and was docked here with just enough time to join us in the procession from the church down to the harbor.
Madonna del Lume Festa

While not specifically a Knights of Columbus event, as mentioned above, many of our council's members are also ushers, lectors, choir members, and participate in Mass in other ways, most wearing their name badges. So there were some in the Festa Madonna del Lume Mass on Sunday, October 15th, including yours truly who took video. Click here for more videos.
Viva Maria!
Upcoming Events:
Just a reminder our annual  Intellectual Disabilities (ID) Drive aka "Tootsie Roll Drive" is this weekend, Saturday, October 21st at the 5:30 pm Mass, and Sunday, October 22nd, all day at all Masses. We still need more volunteers so please contact our ID Drive Chairman Chris Forte at 562-726-8326 or email at cforte844@gmail.com if you can help at all or just show up!

Also that night, though not an official Knights of Columbus event, we could call this volunteering in a Community program and so I ask as many brother Knights as possible to attend "Shoebox Night" as put on by the Little Italy Heritage Commission that I am a board member of, a committee of the Convivio Society. It will be at Our Lady of the Rosary Upper Hall this Saturday, October 21st at 6:00 pm and is FREE with free wine, refreshments and some type of entertainment. In addition, we need as many OLR parishioners and residents and former residents of Little Italy to also attend as this is about preserving the history and culture of Italian-Americans in San Diego. Please go to the following link to find out more:Shoebox Night
Our next General Meeting is Monday, October 23rd. As always at the Upper Hall of Our Lady of the Rosary Church with a Social at 6:30 pm (open to all) and meeting at 7:00 pm (open only to brother Knights.) We always request you bring some food or drink to share at the Social if you can.

It Will Be A Breakfast Eggstravaganza!

Our next egg breakfast is Sunday, November 19th. Please come to our next General Meeting next Monday, October 23rd for more information, and an email blast plus some phone calls will be sent out about it. Thank you.
